It is now more than a year since Alexander, Susie and I started on the journey to set up Empower New Energy, with the motivation to create a business dedicated to make distributed renewables happen in Africa and other countries most in need of it. I want to give my sincere thanks to all friends, partners and allies for your tremendous interest and support in this initiative.
We have come a very long way in a relatively short time; together with our partners we have built a strong pipeline of projects, and have set up a scalable and collaborative investment model. Testament to our early success, we were one of a handful of new companies to be selected to participate in the Luxembourg International Climate Finance Accelerator (ICFA), giving us the unique opportunity to enhance our skills and network required to raise climate and impact capital. I am also delighted to be working with a team of individuals at Empower who possess a unique combination of experience and skills.
We are moving steadily towards the first capitalisation of our targeted USD 50m fundraising, thanks to the collaboration with all our investor partners.
In terms of climate action, far more is certainly needed. Notwithstanding commitments and pledges remade this week at the global climate summit in Poland, the urgent and somewhat surprising reality – as reflected on in my blog recently published in Energy Post – is that in Africa, the share of renewables is actually falling. I will keep on sharing my reflections and updates, so you can follow me on Twitter here.
I sincerely wish you all a cheerful and exciting New Year - with lots of new energy!
